Half of the city became part of the 8th Congressional District in 2012 due to the massive redistricting of the 11 congressional districts in Virginia. Prior to the revision of legislative districts, the entire city was part of the 10th Congressional District. However, the redistricting was ruled unconstitutional before the 2016 elections due to the existence of gerrymandering that created partisan districts.
